DIY: Bathroom Demolition and Renovation Prep
Before you can put in that fancy new bathtub, you have to take out the old one. Same goes for those fancy new tiles, that fancy new sink, and that fancy new - well, you get the idea.
For those of you who absolutely must do it yourself (either because you like the challenge, lack the funds to hire a professional team, or have nothing better to do), here is a quick rundown of the steps you’re going to want to take to prepare your bathroom for renovations. Needless, we always recommend calling a professional who specializes in selective demolition in order to avoid harm to yourself or damage to the integrity of your home. Naturally, we’re always happy to take on the job ourselves.
Now, before we get started…
Safety
Wear appropriate safety gear
Safety glasses
Steel toe boots
Gloves
Knee pads (recommended)
Ventilate the area to manage dust and fumes.
Be cautious with plumbing and electrical systems to avoid damage.
If you must take down a wall, make sure that you don’t take down a load bearing wall, which would put the integrity of your home at risk.
Now that you’re wearing the right safety equipment, let’s get started!
Preparation
Tools & Supplies: Gather necessary tools including a sledgehammer, pry bar, utility knife, drill, and safety gear (goggles, gloves, etc.).
Permits: Check if a permit is needed for demolition.
Shut Off Utilities: Turn off water, electricity, and gas to the bathroom.
Protect Surrounding Areas: Use plastic sheeting and painter’s tape to cover doors and vents to prevent dust spread.
Remove Fixtures
Toilet: Drain and remove the toilet by disconnecting it from the water supply and unbolting it from the floor.
Sink and Vanity: Shut off water valves, disconnect plumbing, and remove the sink. Then detach the vanity from the wall.
Bathtub/Shower: Disconnect the plumbing, remove the drain, and cut through caulking and screws. Depending on the type, either cut and remove the tub or disassemble the shower.
Remove Tile and Flooring
Wall Tile: Score grout lines with a utility knife, then use a chisel and hammer to remove tiles.
Floor Tile: Pry up tiles or use a chisel and hammer. Remove any underlayment using a pry bar.
Remove Walls
Drywall: Cut around electrical outlets and plumbing. Use a hammer to create openings in drywall, then pull it down.
Studs and Insulation: Remove insulation and studs if necessary, cutting nails or screws holding them in place.
Clean Up
Debris Removal: Bag up debris and ensure proper disposal, possibly using a dumpster for large amounts.
Final Inspection: Check for any remaining fixtures or materials to remove before proceeding with renovation.
